Walk This Way

A couple weeks ago, I finally fulfilled my video game dream. I purchased Guitar Hero for Wii! I wasn't planning on buying it...or any other game for a while. I have no job and am low on funds. I'm happy with the two games I got for Christmas (Mario Party 8 and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) and the classic games I've downloaded (Mario 1, Mario 3, and Zelda).

Then I walked into Circuit City.

If you're not aware, every Circuit City in the country is closing very soon. Therefore, they are selling all their merchandise at Black Friday-like prices. I wandered in the other day to check out the discounts. I didn't intend to buy much, but thought it was worth a look around. I did have my eyes peeled for Guitar Hero and other things I wanted for my Wii. But all I could find were stacks and stacks of the guitar controllers, not the actual game. I made several laps around the store and was about to leave when I made one last trip through the video game section, and peeked around a corner I hadn't noticed before. And there it was. An entire wall of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Edition on sale for only $40! That's about 50% off! I snagged it.

I've been playing pretty frequently since I bought it. I've beat the easy and medium level and am beginning to tackle hard...which is true to its name. And I still have to get through expert. Perhaps some day I'll be a real fake Guitar Hero.

Lego New York

I completely stole this off a New York Times blog. I found myself laughing at the simple creativity. It may or may not resonate as strongly with a non-New Yorker. See how many of these you get:

During the cold and dark Berlin winter days, I spend a lot of time with my boys in their room. And as I look at the toys scattered on the floor, my mind inevitably wanders back to New York.

Easy Money

A couple weeks ago a friend from Studio 42 sent me an email letting me know about a one-time gig helping out with a JC Penney fashion show. I promptly sent along my resume to the company, and eventually heard back a kind of iffy response...something like, "Your resume looks great and if we don't use you for this job, we'll probably use you in the future." So, I kind of thought that meant "no" because I didn't hear anything else for a while. But then just a few days ago, I did hear from the company again saying they would like me to work the event...but it would be on the strike crew from 10pm to 4am! Sounds like a rough shift, but I'm always awake then anyway, so I figured I could do it, especially since I'm pretty desperate for cash! And the pay was a flat fee of $175. Not bad for 6 hours of work.

So, I showed up Tuesday night ready for a long and tedious night. It was kind of tedious, but it turned out not to be too long. I packed up votive candles, removed butterfly stickers from the floors and windows, and helped move stuff out into trucks. But at about 1am, we were done! And I still got paid $175! I hope they'll call me again because I could use the easy money.

The wind here is CRAZY today. I was woken up several times in the early morning hours because of the howling winds. I heard the weather was bad in Ohio yesterday...storms, wind, power out. It seems to have moved east over night. I watched the news this morning and saw that it is pretty dangerous out there. I haven't left home yet and I'm kind of afraid to.

The Most Exciting Thing in My Life is a Microwave

1:08 PM, Tuesday, February 3, 2009 / Posted by Christy / comments (1)

Still no job. Boo. And not nearly as many blog-worthy things have happened to me as they did last week when I posted. I've been job searching, but it is very difficult to do when you're looking for something temporary, but you have no idea how temporary.

The most exciting thing that happened was that last night, when walking home from the bar with Eduardo, we found a microwave! As you know if you follow my blog, Eduardo recently moved to a new home, and he's still aquiring some of those home essentials. We've been scouring Craigslist for free microwaves, but haven't had much luck so far. So we were pretty excited to see one going out with the trash on 84th last night. We carried it the short few blocks home and plugged it in. Success! It works! The only issue is that it is missing the glass turntable inside. But whatever. It will heat food and that's what's important. So, it's living in the middle of my floor at the moment, but will soon make the trek to Eduardo's place in Queens.

The snow has been coming down in blankets all day today. Yesterday it felt like spring was just around the corner! I guess the groundhog was right after all.
